Chinese recycled polymer producer Zhenjiang Ceville has started construction of a new plastic recycling plant in the city of Zhenjiang, located in eastern China’s Jiangsu province. This project responds to the growing demand for recycled products in the market.

Ceville’s ambitious project includes units dedicated to the washing, shredding and pelletizing of waste bottles. Facilities for the chemical recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) have also been included.

Ceville increases production with plastic recycling plant

The plant will have the capacity to produce 100,000 tons of mechanically recycled PET pellets annuallyThe company’s annual production capacity includes 40,000 tons of mechanically recycled food-grade PET and polyethylene/polypropylene (rPE/rPP) pellets per year and 10,000 tons of chemically recycled PET pellets per year.

The total investment for this project is estimated at 500 million yuan, equivalent to US$69 million. Zhenjiang Ceville plans to put into operation a chemical recycling unit in chemical recycling PET chemical recycling unit in the first quarter of 2025. The other units will start operations between the second and third quarter of the same year, according to the planned schedule.

Ceville and food quality

Importantly, Zhenjiang Ceville was founded in 2018 with the main objective of producing recycled polyester staple fibers. However, the rapid increase in demand for food-grade recycled polymers prompted the company to expand. At the end of 2021, Ceville commissioned a mechanically recycled PET pellet plant with a capacity of 25,000 tons per year and in 2022, it launched an rPE/rPP unit with a capacity of 10,000 tons per year.

In addition, Zhenjiang Ceville has been noted for being the first company in mainland China to receive certification from the European Food Safety Authority for its post-consumer recycled PET, which is used as a food grade material. This achievement underscores the company’s commitment to the production of safe, high-quality recycled polymers.

This new project by Zhenjiang Ceville will contribute to meeting local demand for recycled plastics and support global sustainability goals. The plant’s ability to produce large volumes of high-quality recycled plastics will help reduce reliance on virgin plastics and reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.
