The energy company BNZ, an independent renewable energy producer, has signed contracts in Italy for supply 1,600 GWh of clean energy to steel companies and large Italian industries that consume a lot of electricity. According to the company, the contracted energy volume is equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 600,000 homes and will prevent the emission of 528,000 tons of CO₂.
How does this agreement work?
The contracts are made through an Italian mechanism called “Energy Release 2.0“, which depends on the public entity GSE. This system is designed to:
- Helping the industry to obtain renewable energy fixed price for 3 years (€65 per MWh).
- Promote the construction of new renewable energy plants in Italy, because the industry is committed to buying that energy.
In addition, the company obtains a fixed rate for 20 years for the new projects I develop.
Italy accelerates industrial decarbonization
Currently, the Italian steel industry faces significant challenges related to rising energy costs and European targets for emissions reduction. This series of contracts will bring price stability to steel companies in the face of market volatility.
The contracts are also allowing the energy company to move from being just a “renewable energy builder” to an integrated energy platform with a total storage portfolio of 850 MW. Between 2026 and 2027 they plan to deploy 530 MW of storage in Southern Europe, of which 210 MW in Italy.
