Green hydrogen promotes new investment in electrical infrastructure in India following the selection of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL) to develop an interstate transmission system that will support the expansion of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The contract involves an investment of approximately 8.5 billion rupees and was awarded through the Government of India’s Tariff-Based Competitive Tender (TBCB) scheme, in which the company submitted the most competitive bid.

Green hydrogen, a network for an energy demand of 4,500 MW

The project, called Transmission system for proposed projects of green hydrogen and green ammonia in the Vizag area (Phase I) this will allow the integration into the grid of an estimated demand of 4,500 MW destined for new industrial facilities linked to low-emission fuels.

Likewise, the infrastructure will strengthen the electricity supply in the Pendurthi-Vizag corridor, an area experiencing rapid growth thanks to new investments in data centers, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure.

The initiative will be implemented through the special purpose entity Vizag Power Transmission Ltd., responsible for developing the necessary infrastructure to respond to the increased energy demand in the region.

New substations and network expansion

The scope of the contract includes the construction of a 765/400 kV GIS substation with four 1,500 MVA transformers in Pendurthi and a second Khammam-II substation with three transformers of the same capacity.

In addition, the project includes the installation of high-voltage transmission lines that will facilitate the integration of new industrial loads and strengthen the reliability of the electrical system in Andhra Pradesh.

With this development, AESL will incorporate 1,582 kilometers of transmission lines and 10.500 MVA additional transformation capacity. Once the project is completed, the company’s transmission network will reach 29,531 kilometers and a total capacity of 133.675 MVA.

A crucial support for the hydrogen economy

The CEO of Adani Energy Solutions, Kandarp Patel he stated that the project represents a step forward in strengthening the energy infrastructure that will support the next stage of India’s industrial growth.

According to the executive, the new network will accelerate the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia in Andhra Pradesh while strengthening the electrical system needed to supply the growing digital infrastructure being developed in the region.

The expansion of transmission capacity will also facilitate the connection of future industrial projects that will demand a reliable and high-capacity electricity supply, a fundamental aspect for the development of the hydrogen economy.

Vizag gains prominence as an industrial and technological center

Vizag continues to strengthen its position as one of the country’s main digital infrastructure hubs thanks to the development of hyperscalable data centers artificial intelligence projects, new underwater connections, and a growing logistics and industrial infrastructure.

In this context, having a high-capacity electricity transmission network will be crucial to guaranteeing energy availability, maintaining the stability of the electrical system, and supporting long-term industrial competitiveness in a region that aspires to become one of the main centers of India’s green hydrogen production.

The award reinforces the role of transmission infrastructure as a strategic element for integrating new clean energy projects, expanding the capacity of the national electricity grid, and supporting the growth of industries linked to green hydrogen and green ammonia in the coming years.
