This morning, the Campeche platform was engulfed in flames and chaos, as a catastrophic explosion rocked the Nohoch-Alfa offshore platform, owned by Mexican oil giant Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex). The incident, which occurred off the coast of Tabasco and Campeche, has so far left six people injured and has generated growing concern in the country.
The explosion took place around 5:17 am in compressor area 4 while maintenance work was being carried out on the sour gas lines. Despite the rapid response of the company, which deployed four boats to fight the fire and evacuated more than 200 workers, the magnitude of the incident was shocking.
Through social networks, images and videos of the platform engulfed in flames went viral, generating concern and speculation among the population. Salvador García Soto, a well-known journalist, published an image of the burning platform and claimed to have received information from workers who spoke of various disappearances and deaths, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) addressed the issue during his morning press conference, reporting that it is a gas production platform and that measures are already being taken to address the emergency. He confirmed the evacuation of all platform personnel and sent a message of solidarity to the workers.
Petróleos Mexicanos issued a statement confirming the number of injured, raising it to six people. In addition, the Emergency Shutdown System was activated and four boats were deployed to control the fire. In total, 321 workers were evacuated with the help of seven boats.
Concern over the platform fire
This tragic incident has alerted the authorities and has raised concerns about safety in operations. The Nohoch-Alfa platform, located in the Campeche Sound some 85 kilometers from Ciudad del Carmen, has been considered one of the most emblematic assets of the state company in years of intense hydrocarbon exploitation.
Petróleos Mexicanos is the state oil company of Mexico and one of the largest companies in the country. It was founded in 1938 and has vast experience in the exploration, production, refining and distribution of oil and natural gas.
This company is responsible for most of the hydrocarbon production in Mexico and plays a key role in the country’s economy. In addition, it has an extensive infrastructure network that includes refineries, oil and gas pipelines.
As efforts to control the fire are deployed and the causes of the explosion are investigated, the Mexican people join in praying for the speedy recovery of the injured and eagerly await to learn the true dimension of this marine tragedy.
