Inspenet, July 7, 2023.

In the first four hours after its launch, five million users signed up for Threads , Meta’s new text-based social network, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg said late Wednesday.

Threads, Meta’s social messaging network that is Twitter’s direct competitor, experienced initial download problems as the company brought its launch earlier. The countdown to its download on Apple’s App Store ended at 23:00 GMT (01:00 CET on Thursday), but two important details emerged: European Union countries and Android phones did not have access to the application. .

During the first minutes of availability in the App Store, many users tried to download the application without success and went to “the competition” to express their complaints. On the other hand, others shared screenshots showing off their new profiles on Threads .

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, was known to be working on developing a new social network . However, its presentation was accelerated in response to the restrictions imposed by Twitter regarding the reading of daily messages and the visibility of open content.

Threads is linked to Instagram

The app presents itself as an extension of Instagram for communication and is closely linked to it. Allows users to keep their username, follow the same people, and control who can reply to their messages

Adam Mosseri, the manager of Instagram, mentioned in a first message on Threads that the application is already “open to the public”, although he acknowledged that it will take time to spread. He expressed his hope that it will become a “welcoming and accessible” platform.

In an interview, Mosseri commented: “The idea is to create an open and friendly community space.”

As reported to The Verge, the application is available in 100 countries, excluding European countries due to “the complexities associated with complying with certain laws that will come into force next year”, possibly related to competition between digital companies.

How does it work?

Currently, those wishing to sign up for the new app must have an Instagram account, which will be their username on the new platform. If desired, users have the option to import the list of people they follow on Instagram directly into Threads.

Another important aspect is that verified users on Instagram will also be verified in the new application. Likewise, users can customize their account settings to be private or public .

Goodbye Twitter?

Threads has been nicknamed by the US media as a “Twitter killer” (Twitter killer), as she attacks Elon Musk’s network from her very name, since that word in English means “threads” and is part of her own vocabulary, besides sounding like “threats” (threats).

Its interface is also very similar to that of Twitter, but simpler: messages are grouped into two tabs, one called “threads” (like Tweets) and another “replies” and messages can receive likes, comments, and resubmissions ( such as retweets), as well as being shared.

In this sense, the head of Instagram said in the interview that “Twitter was a pioneer of the space” but “given everything that is happening”, the company has seen “an opportunity to build something that was open and good for the community that I was already using Instagram.”
