Cooperation in energy transition between the European Union (EU) and Uruguay has been strengthened with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that covers renewable energy, energy efficiency and renewable hydrogen.
The agreement was reached during the EU-CELAC Summit in Brussels and is signed by the Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simson, and the Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Bustillo Bonasso.
This Memorandum is part of the European Union’s Global Gateway Investment Agenda for Latin America and the Caribbean, presented by the President of the European Commission, Úrsula von der Leyen, at the EU-LAC business round table.
Úrsula von der Leyen, stated that both the EU and Uruguay share the ambition to promote the use of renewable energy in line with their ambitious climate goals. Both parties agree on the importance of establishing a global hydrogen market with clear standards and trusted international certification systems to drive the clean energy transition.
The signed Memorandum of Understanding provides a foundation to guide and strengthen their collaboration on these issues as they work together to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
EU-Uruguay alliance for the energy transition
The signed Memorandum establishes objectives and lays the groundwork for a future roadmap that will outline specific activities supported by Global Gateway’s investment strategy.
Potential areas of collaboration include reviewing and strengthening actions and policies to promote energy efficiency, as well as policy exchanges related to renewable energy and renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.
Specifically, the cooperation will cover research and regulatory projects , including work on definitions, methodologies, sustainability standards, certification systems and measures to boost energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable hydrogen.
Finally, the European Union points out that investments in renewable energies, energy efficiency and renewable hydrogen and its derivatives must comply with applicable environmental laws in both the marine and terrestrial sectors, both in the EU and in Uruguay, to simultaneously address the climate and biodiversity crises. In addition, the policies that promote them must adequately take into account the protection, conservation and restoration of water systems and aquatic ecosystems.
