Seaspan Energy becomes the first company to be accredited to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Port of Vancouver. This accreditation is granted by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority ( VFPA ) and authorizes ship-to-ship bunkering in the port.
Seaspan Energy’s first LNG supplier
Seaspan’s fleet includes three advanced LNG bunkering vessels – Seaspan Garibaldi , Seaspan Lions and Seaspan Baker – designed specifically to ensure safe, efficient and sustainable bunkering. Each vessel is equipped with cutting-edge technology and minimises emissions while meeting stringent maritime sustainability standards set by the International Maritime Organisation .
LNG fuel, recognized as a transition fuel, plays a crucial role in the decarbonization of maritime transport. By obtaining this accreditation, Seaspan and the Port of Vancouver reinforce their commitment to global climate goals for 2030. In addition, this initiative reflects a model that other ports and companies could adopt to reduce the environmental footprint of the industry.
This achievement is the result of years of joint work between Seaspan and the VFPA , highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in the transformation of the maritime industry. According to Harly Penner, Senior Vice President of Seaspan Energy, this progress represents a victory for the company, and also a fundamental step towards a more sustainable future.
With the start of operations of its fleet, Seaspan Energy is positioning itself as a global benchmark in the supply of clean marine fuels. This development strengthens the leadership of the Port of Vancouver as a strategic point for sustainable maritime trade, generating economic and environmental benefits for the region and setting a standard for the rest of the world.
