Texas is preparing for a nuclear energy transformation with the arrival of two advanced projects led by Natura Resources. The company has announced the implementation of molten salt reactors (MSR) in the Permian Basin and the RELLIS campus of Texas A&M University, with the goal of strengthening energy security and access to clean water.

Nuclear power in the Permian Basin

Natura Resources has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Texas Tech University (TTU) and Abilene Christian University (ACU) to integrate MSR technology with water desalination systems . This effort, which also involves the Texas Produced Water Consortium (TxPWC), seeks to repurpose water generated in oil and gas extraction for agricultural and other sustainable uses.

This collaboration allows us to address two critical issues: energy demand and water scarcity in Texas.

Said Doug Robison, CEO of Natura Resources.

Texas A&M’s RELLIS Campus and the Future of Modular Reactors

In parallel, Natura Resources is installing an MSR-100 reactor on the RELLIS campus as part of the “The Energy Proving Ground” program. This initiative seeks to commercialize small modular reactors (SMR) to ensure a reliable power supply in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

The Natura MSR-100 will demonstrate how advanced nuclear technology can fuel energy growth in Texas and the nation.

Robison stressed.

MSR-100: a compact and efficient reactor

The Natura MSR-100 is distinguished by its liquid fuel design, which improves safety and reduces the generation of radioactive waste. In addition, it operates at temperatures above 600 °C , allowing greater energy efficiency and facilitating water desalination.

Gov. Greg Abbott has emphasized the importance of clean energy to the state’s future. ” Texas is ready to lead the nuclear energy renaissance in the U.S. ,” he said in his recent State of the State address.

Senator Charles Perry also supported these developments, highlighting the synergy between energy production and water management: ” By integrating desalination with nuclear generation, we ensure a sustainable future for Texas .”

Economic and community impact

Natura Resources’ new projects will have a direct impact on economic growth and job creation in Texas. The combination of reliable power and clean water will attract energy-intensive industries such as data centers and advanced manufacturing.

With these deployments, Natura Resources is paving the way toward a more sustainable energy model, combining nuclear innovation with water solutions for the benefit of Texas and the rest of the country.
