European EPC contractor MT Group has signed a contract with the Klaipeda State Port Authority for the construction of the first green hydrogen production and refueling station in the Baltic States.

The Port of Klaipeda will produce green hydrogen using a polymer electrolyte membrane ( PEM ) electrolyzer, an advanced technology that enables hydrogen generation using electricity from renewable sources.
The plant is expected to have a production capacity of up to 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day, reaching an annual output of 127 tons. The hydrogen generated will be stored in high-pressure tanks, ensuring a continuous and safe supply.
MT Group CEO Mindaugas Zakaras highlighted the relevance of this project: “The Port of Klaipeda has the potential to become a reference centre for green technologies in the Baltic. This pilot project not only shows a strong commitment to sustainability, but will also set a standard for future hydrogen initiatives in the region. ”.
The project is part of Lithuania’s Energy Development Programme 2021-2030 , promoted by the Ministry of Energy, with the aim of promoting the use of advanced technologies and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Klaipeda State Port Authority General Director Algis Latakas stressed the importance of diversifying energy sources: “In addition to solar and wind energy, we will now have green hydrogen as a new option. This development is essential to reduce our environmental impact and promote clean energy for industry, transport and ships. ”.
The hydrogen produced at the port will be used for the operational needs of the port, as well as for rail transport and private vehicles. In the future, it is planned to refuel commercial ships. This alternative and environmentally friendly fuel will be used to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify, consolidating Lithuania as a benchmark in energy innovation.
MT Group , known for leading renewable energy and critical infrastructure projects, has started preparations for the construction, which is scheduled for completion in 2025. The company also has plans to continue developing large-scale green hydrogen solutions across Europe, supporting the transition to a more sustainable future.
