The Ministry of Ecological Transition has authorized EDP to operate Group 1 of the Aboño thermal power plant for 2,000 hours in 2025. This measure responds to the need to guarantee the stability of the national electricity system, while Group 2 remains out of service due to its innovation and technological transformation.
The operations of the Aboño Thermal Power Plant
Currently, Group 2 uses coal and steelmaking gases, which will be adapted to operate with industrial gases, natural gas and renewable hydrogen. This process will take several months, with the aim of aligning operations with the decarbonisation objectives promoted by EDP , thus reducing emissions and optimising the use of energy resources.
Group 1, initially designed as a backup and limited to 500 hours per year, will take on a more active temporary role. The authorization is based on the environmental impact that the inactivity of both units would have, because the gases from ArcelorMittal ‘s steel plants , essential for the operation, would be burned in a flare, increasing atmospheric pollution.
The conversion of Group 2 will allow the incorporation of cleaner energy sources, which represents a step forward for the project. Once the works are completed, Group 1 will be closed and dismantled, marking the beginning of a new phase for the thermal power plant.
