Ontario’s Independent Electric System Operator (IESO) has approved the continuation of the refurbishment of Bruce Power’s Unit 5 , marking a crucial step in the major component replacement (MCR) project. The refurbishment, which is set to begin in 2026, aims to extend the reactor’s life by up to 35 years, ensuring reliable, clean electricity for Ontario for decades to come.
Bruce Power’s Unit 5 renovation is an investment in clean energy
This project is part of a broader effort to secure the province’s long-term energy supply. Bruce Power’s nuclear renewal strengthens Canada’s energy independence and also contributes significantly to local economic development.
Privately funded MCR projects generate more than $10 billion in annual economic activity, creating more than 22,000 jobs annually in key construction and energy sectors.
As part of a broader reactor life extension program, this refurbishment follows the success of Unit 6, which returned to commercial service in 2024, a year ahead of schedule and within budget.
Units 3 and 4 are currently undergoing renovations , and Unit 5 will be the next to receive significant upgrades. This ensures that Ontario remains a world leader in nuclear plant renovations.
Global impact on energy and health
In addition to the reliable electricity it will provide, the Bruce Power reactor is also vital for the production of medical isotopes used in cancer treatment around the world. In this way, Bruce Power plays a crucial role in energy security and global health.
Ontario Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce emphasized that more than 90% of the materials purchased for this project are Canadian-made , reinforcing the company’s commitment to local production and sustainability.
This project ensures the cleanest and most reliable electricity, while supporting local communities and contributing to the region’s economic prosperity.
Lecce commented.
With electricity demand projected to increase over the next 25 years, Bruce Power’s upgrades ensure a reliable and affordable electricity system for Ontario homes and businesses. The upgrade of Unit 5 is just one of several Bruce Power units that will be upgraded over the coming decades, ensuring the availability of clean energy for future generations.
