Belgium, for the first time in history, produced enough green electricity to cover all of the country’s electricity demand through its wind farms and solar panels, according to the operator Elia Group through its LinkedIn account.

The two technologies generated 8,303 MW of electricity, beating the record achieved the previous Sunday of 7,695 MW. Likewise, what was achieved on May 11, 2022 was also exceeded, with 7,112 MW.

This milestone occurred on Monday, May 29 between 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. “Moments like this highlight the need for a new market model that encourages flexible consumption,” said an operator of the Belgian transmission system, Elia.

“With such a model, consumers with heat pumps and electric cars will be able to charge their appliances when there is plenty of cheap, green electricity available, while helping to maintain the balance of the grid. Therefore, consumers will play a key role in the energy transition, a role that we at Elia are working to foster”, concluded the operator.

In the same line of sustainable energy, Elia announced that “more than 1 TWh of solar energy was generated in Belgium for the first time last month.” Through the social network, he indicated that “solar panels across the country produced a new record of 1,036 GWh of electricity, which is 100 GWh more than the previous record, which was set in July last year.”

“The wind production figures for May this year were also encouraging: 781 GWh of onshore and offshore wind power was produced (well above what was produced in May last year: 629 GWh).”

The company concluded by stating that “these figures represent a victory for the energy transition and led to lower prices in the energy markets.”
