TotalEnergies expands offshore operations in Namibia with new license

TotalEnergies takes operational control of block PEL104, reinforcing its offshore expansion in the strategic Lüderitz basin.

In a strategic move to strengthen its offshore portfolio in Africa, TotalEnergies signed definitive agreements to acquire a 42.5% operating interest in the PEL104 license, shared with Petrobras (42.5%), Namcor (10%), and Eight Offshore (10%).Namcor (10%) and Eight Offshore (5%). This follows the recent acquisition of a stake in the PEL83 block, underscoring the company’s growing interest in the region’s hydrocarbon potential.

Technical alliances and offshore exploration

The participation structure in PEL104 reflects a joint strategy between international and national players, allowing for a combination of global technical expertise and local knowledge. TotalEnergies, as the lead operator, will apply operational synergies to drive exploratory activitiesleveraging seismic data and previous developments such as the Venus and Mopane discoveries.

The Lüderitz Basin has emerged as an area of high interest within the African offshore landscape. For TotalEnergies, this new move not only expands its geographical presence, but also aligns its operations with a sustainable, multi-energy exploration strategy. Namibia represents for the company a key platform for the development of low-carbon energy resources.

Energy projections and pending regulations

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals by Namibian authorities and consortium partners, positions TotalEnergies as a major player in the Namibian offshore. The French company, present in Namibia since 1964, has strengthened its commitment to the country in recent years, both in fuel distribution and new energy investments.

With this acquisition, TotalEnergies seeks to increase its upstream capabilities on the African continent, integrating advanced technologies and consolidating partnerships that will enable it to develop energy more efficiently and sustainably.
