The recent discovery of a super-large uranium deposit in the Jingchuan region of the Ordos Basin has put China at the forefront of strategic mineral exploration. The breakthrough, announced on January 10 by the Geological Survey of China, has significant implications for the security of the country’s energy resources .
Super-large uranium deposit opens up opportunities for China
The project, carried out in collaboration with PetroChina Changqing Oilfield, China’s Nuclear Industry Geology Bureau and provincial agencies, marks a breakthrough in locating the first large-scale uranium deposit in an aeolian sandstone environment . Such deposits, rare globally, reinforce the country’s mining potential and respond to its energy self-sufficiency strategy.
With more than 50 operating nuclear reactors, China is seeking to ensure a stable supply of uranium through discoveries such as this one. In addition, the Ordos Basin area, along with regions such as Tarim, Junggar and Songliao, offers vast potential for future exploration, covering approximately 200,000 square kilometers .
The discovery will increase the country’s uranium reserves and also strengthen its independence in the nuclear supply chain. This initiative underlines the importance of technological innovation in the prospecting and extraction of strategic minerals.
