Sarawak’s ambitious plan to supply renewable energy to Singapore has a start date: 2032. This energy interconnection project, which includes a submarine transmission cable. The project, which includes a submarine transmission cable, represents a significant step towards integrating Borneo into the regional electricity market.

Financing and construction of the submarine cable

The initiative moved forward strongly after receiving conditional clearance from the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) in 2025. Sarawak’s Prime Minister Abang Johari confirmed that bilateral talks have already defined key technical and financial aspects to finalize the supply of 1GW.

The submarine cable system will be carried out by a consortium with participation from both Malaysia and Singapore. This consortium will also be backed by international financial institutions. Among the players involved is Sarawak Energy, which has been a leader in the development of biomass and hydropower solutions in the region.

The export plan is part of a broader strategy to position Sarawak as the clean energy hub of Southeast Asia. With generation targets of 10GW by 2030 and 15GW by 2035, the state already supplies electricity to West Kalimantan and plans new connections to Sabah and Brunei.
