The Australian federal government granted environmental approval to the Theodore Wind Farm project, spearheaded by RWE. This authorization was issued under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. The facility will have a capacity of 1.1 gigawatts and will be located in the Central Queensland region. With this resolution, the multinational company secures the state and federal permits required to advance to the secondary processing phases with local authorities.

Consequently, the estimated investment for the execution of this project amounts to 3 billion Australian dollars. This capital will boost the regional economy by contributing 500 million Australian dollars to Queensland during the construction phase. Additionally, a provision of 17.5 million Australian dollars is directly allocated to community benefit funds.
Planning anticipates the creation of up to 500 jobs during the peak construction period. Subsequently, the operational phase will require 25 direct positions and generate approximately 300 indirect jobs over the plant’s projected 30-year lifespan. Civil works will formally commence in 2027, once the final investment decision is made.
Regarding technical components, the clean generation complex will be located in Banana Shire and will consist of a maximum of 170 wind turbines. The design also integrates a battery energy storage system to optimize supply. According to corporate estimates, the plant will produce enough electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes in the Queensland region.
Likewise, federal approval imposes strict conditions aimed at biodiversity preservation and the mitigation of impacts on the natural environment. The executive management of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia noted that the resolution ratifies the corporate commitment to the security of the electricity system. The company confirmed that it will maintain close collaboration with regulatory entities, local residents, and involved local stakeholders.
Furthermore, the Theodore project has a favorable regulatory history, such as the state development approval obtained in June 2025. Similarly, the initiative was awarded a contract in May 2026 within the government’s Capacity Investment Scheme. RWE has maintained active operations in the Australian market since 2013, consolidating its presence with assets such as the Limondale solar farm in New South Wales, which has a capacity of 314 megawatts and operates alongside an eight-hour battery storage system.
