Prysmian's Power Interconnection

The Italian company Prysmian has received formal authorization from Terna and STEG to proceed with the construction of the ELMED infrastructure, the planned interconnection between Italy and Tunisia. The net value of this contract amounts to approximately 460 million euros, a figure that will be immediately added to the winning bidder’s portfolio of pending projects.

Technical infrastructure and submarine cable deployment

The core logistics engineering will be carried out from the Arco Felice plant in Naples, which will work in direct coordination with the advanced asset monitoring system located in Palermo. In addition, the organization will deploy its specialized fleet of cable-laying vessels to ensure the precise positioning of the systems on the Mediterranean seabed.

Strategic impact of the power interconnection on the regional energy transition

Raúl Gil, the company’s executive vice president of Transmission, explained that these technical resources will enable the efficient integration of Tunisia’s clean and renewable energy production into the European market. The development of this bidirectional grid will reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels and provide the necessary connectivity to support Tunisia’s economic growth.
