MiQ launches digital registry for methane emissions certificates

The new platform incorporates capabilities for crude oil and aims to support compliance with the European Union Methane Regulation.
MiQ lanzó un registro digital para certificados de petróleo y gas

Founded by RMI and SYSTEMIQ in 2020, MiQ is the world’s leading non-profit organization in methane emissions certification.

Its mission is to drive a rapid reduction in methane emissions from the oil and gas sector through a credible and transparent certification system that incentivizes improvements and ensures accountability.

The organization announced the launch of its new MiQ Registry, a digital platform designed to manage oil and gas certificates associated with methane emissions performance.

The announcement was made during the FLAME conference in Amsterdam and represents the first time such a system has incorporated specific capabilities for crude oil certificates in addition to natural gas certificates.

Registry seeks to strengthen emissions transparency

The Registry functions as a secure electronic ledger where certificates are managed from issuance to retirement, providing traceability and independent verification of methane emissions performance in energy operations.

The platform aims to prevent issues such as double counting and double issuance of certificates, ensuring authenticity and transparency within the low-emissions oil and gas market.

“Without a reliable and independent registry infrastructure, how can industry, governments, regulators, and civil society fully trust methane emissions reports?” stated Georges Tijbosch, CEO of MiQ.

MiQ incorporates certification for crude oil

The organization indicated that the new registry will allow for the management of certificates related to crude oil production, expanding the scope of methane emissions certification beyond natural gas assets.

MiQ further confirmed that it expects to announce the certification of a crude oil production facility shortly, which would demonstrate the applicability of the model in oil operations.

Currently, the organization certifies more than 7% of the global gas supply, with approximately 28 billion MMBtu registered within the MiQ system.

Platform aims to support European methane regulation

The new MiQ Registry was developed to facilitate compliance with the upcoming European Union Methane Regulation, especially in international LNG and crude oil operations.

The platform will be able to operate in conjunction with the CIRIS (Certificate Import Reconciliation Information System), developed by MiQ to track certificates through mass balance mechanisms and documentary tracking.

According to the organization, CIRIS combines elements of book and claim, track and claim, and mass balance systems to improve emissions traceability in international energy supply chains.

Independent certification gains relevance in energy markets

In addition to certificates, the registry will allow for the hosting of certificates issued under other independent standards, including the EO100™ standard from Equitable Origin for responsible energy development.

MiQ also recently reported a partnership with the Ammonia Energy Association to offer registry services related to ammonia supply chains.

The organization highlighted that its model is based on independent third-party verification and public standards, maintaining a non-profit focus oriented toward reducing global methane emissions and strengthening energy sector transparency.
