MDL provides a transshipment solution for the Uaru offshore project in Guyana

Saipem utilizes MDL technology to prepare the Uaru development in Guyana, one of the primary deepwater projects in Guyana.

MDL has supported Saipem’s operations related to the development of the Uaru field in Guyana’s deep waters by supplying a specialized transshipment solution for handling an umbilical cable destined for the project.

The operation was carried out in the United States and was part of the preparations for the flexible laying activities to be performed by the subsea construction vessel Normand Maximus. The Uaru field is part of the Stabroek block, one of the fastest-growing offshore production areas worldwide.

Tensioning technology for transshipment operations

For the operation, MDL provided its two-track tensioning system, used to transfer the umbilical cable from the dock to the vessel’s under-deck carousel. The package was mobilized from the company’s equipment base in Houma, Louisiana.

The solution included a support structure specifically designed to integrate with existing onboard equipment and ensure proper product alignment during handling and loading maneuvers.

Prior to mobilization, the system underwent a compression test at MDL’s facilities in Houma. The process was supervised by the company’s field service team, which also participated during the transshipment operations.

Continuous support for Guyana’s offshore developments

The collaboration between both companies adds to previous projects in the South American country. MDL had already participated in activities linked to the Yellowtail development, another deepwater production project in the Stabroek block, through equipment from its Winches & Lifting Solutions division.

According to Saipem, the local availability of equipment in the United States allowed for a rapid response to operational requirements during the mobilization of its vessels.

Kingsley Emmanuel, Saipem’s facility manager at Uaru, highlighted that the company needed a tensioning system to support transshipment operations and noted that MDL was able to provide a quick solution thanks to the availability of equipment in the country.

Houma reinforces its role as a regional logistics hub

MDL considers Guyana a strategic market within its growth in the Americas. The company states that its accumulated experience of over 25 years in flexible laying projects, along with the availability of high-capacity equipment, allows it to support offshore developments in various regions.

The company also indicated that it continues to expand the services offered from its Houma base, strengthening its capacity to test, mobilize, and deploy equipment for projects in the Gulf of Mexico, the Americas, and other international deepwater basins.
