The Elera Renováveis company inaugurated this week in Brazil the Janaúba solar complex , the largest in the Americas, with a capacity of 1.2 GW. Previously, the Villanueva project in Mexico held the title of the largest operating photovoltaic facility in North and South America, with the Villanueva I and Villanueva III plants adding a total capacity of 427 MW and 327 MW, respectively.
This recently inaugurated project is made up of 20 solar parks distributed over an area of 3,000 hectares.
Janaúba: an ambitious project
Elera Renováveis’ investment in the project has been approximately R$ 4 billion ($819 million). The Brazilian company specialized in renewable energy began construction in January 2021.
That same year, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) approved financing of R$ 1.47 billion for 14 plants within the complex, which is equivalent to 72% of the total planned investment of R$ 2.04 billion. .
Notably, the complex has tracking systems from US-based Nextracker.
Janaúba has one of the highest concentrations of large-scale solar projects among Brazilian municipalities and has posted a video clip showing the first images of the massive installation on its YouTube channel .
