DTE Energy to Deploy 6 GWh of Storage with LG Energy Solution

The agreement includes eight BESS projects with 6 GWh of capacity to strengthen Michigan's electrical grid.
El almacenamiento de energía en baterías crece en Michigan

LG Energy Solution Vertech and DTE Energy announced an agreement to deploy battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 6 GWh in Michigan. The initiative includes eight projects to be delivered over the next two years and aims to strengthen the reliability of the state’s electrical grid using technology manufactured primarily in North America.

Eight Projects to Reinforce the Electrical Grid

The agreement includes the installation of storage systems capable of providing 1.5 GW of power and 6 GWh of energy capacity. This infrastructure will enable electricity to be stored during periods of generation surplus and supplied when user demand increases.

In this way, operators will be able to reduce pressure on the electrical grid during peak consumption periods. Likewise, the incorporation of energy storage will help reduce the need to continuously start and stop generation facilities to respond to demand fluctuations.

Regional Manufacturing and Domestic Content Compliance

As part of the agreement, LG Energy Solution Vertech will supply battery cells produced in Michigan along with components manufactured at other facilities in the United States and Canada.

All projects will comply with the domestic content requirements established for this type of energy development. The strategy also strengthens the regional supply chain and supports the expansion of industrial capabilities linked to the U.S. energy sector.

Jaehong Park, Chief Executive Officer and President of LG Energy Solution Vertech, emphasized that Michigan represents a strategic location for the company due to its manufacturing importance and the role it plays within the national energy industry.

Data Center Growth Drives New Investments

The expansion of energy storage is also linked to the growth in electrical demand associated with data centers.

DTE Energy indicated that it has identified the necessary resources to serve new technology developments without affecting the supply to existing customers. The company also stated that these investments will enable continued progress in meeting the energy objectives established by the state of Michigan.

Among the associated projects is the energy contract related to Oracle’s data center in Saline Township. According to the company, the storage systems funded for this facility will provide sufficient capacity to cover the battery storage portion of the state’s clean energy targets for 2030.

Energy Storage as a Pillar of the Electrical Transition

The deployment of BESS systems has become one of the most relevant tools for improving the operational stability of modern grids. These solutions enable better utilization of available generation and facilitate the integration of clean energy sources.

In addition to its technical benefits, the agreement between DTE Energy and LG Energy Solution Vertech also represents an opportunity to boost the local economy through the creation of specialized jobs and new industrial investments in Michigan.

With this project portfolio, both companies seek to consolidate a more resilient energy infrastructure capable of responding to demand growth and the state’s future electrification needs.
