The transformation of the La Pereda power plant, located in Mieres, continues to advance with the start of its construction phase after completing the dismantling work and receiving the necessary administrative authorizations.
The project, promoted by Hunosa, marks a significant change in the energy model of the facility after more than 30 years linked to coal.
From thermal to biomass power plant
With an investment of 55 million euros, the future biomass power plant will generate electricity from local renewable resources. This process involves adapting key systems such as the boiler, gas treatment, and fuel storage facilities, which are being redesigned to operate using biomass and recovered solid fuel.
Furthermore, during the previous phase, materials were stockpiled and new equipment was incorporated, which now facilitates the progressive implementation of the technical reforms in each of the plant’s systems.
The project anticipates the creation of at least 200 jobs related to forest management and the use of native biomass. This initiative positions the plant as a driver of development for the forestry sector in Asturias, while simultaneously promoting forest clearing as a preventative measure against wildfires.
Likewise, the facility is designed to be integrated into a broader circular economy strategy, in line with models already implemented in other European countries where this type of plant has been operating for years.
In parallel, the gas treatment area will incorporate advanced technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact. These solutions have been tested in European markets and allow for improved energy efficiency in the process, based on sustainable criteria.
The project reinforces Hunosa’s position as an actor in the energy transition, expanding its activity towards new energies such as biomass and exploring synergies with CO2 capture initiatives and synthetic fuel production.
The La Pereda biomass power plant is scheduled to begin operations in mid-2027. Its commissioning will contribute to reducing dependence on fossil fuels through the use of a renewable, manageable, and locally sourced energy source.
In this context, Hunosa continues to collaborate with the Principality of Asturias to comply with environmental requirements, including the presentation of new technical studies that respond to regulatory demands.
