Babcock LGE the company is expanding its presence in the international gas carrier market after securing a new contract with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for four VLGCs, each with a capacity of 88,000 cubic meters. The vessels will be built in South Korea for the shipowner Oceonix the project will allow the Scottish company to contribute its expertise in engineering and systems integration for handling liquefied gas on large-capacity vessels.
Four 88,000 m³ VLGC tanks for Oceanix
Specifically, the program includes the construction of four Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) of 88,000 m³, Samsung Heavy Industries will be responsible for manufacturing the vessels, while Babcock LGE will participate in the development of gas handling solutions. The contract represents a new project for the Scottish company in South Korea, one of the world’s leading shipbuilding centers, and also expands its involvement in applications for the maritime transport Babcock LGE, a company specializing in large-scale liquefied gas, believes the agreement reflects its engineering capabilities, systems integration expertise, and track record of collaborating with major international shipyards and shipowners.

Gas systems will remain under scrutiny after 2029
Furthermore, Babcock LGE intends to extend its relationship with Oceonix beyond the construction of the four VLGCs, as planned, the delivery of the vessels will take place in 2029 the intention is to maintain a relationship throughout the operational life of the vessels and contribute to the proper functioning of their gas systems once they enter service. In this way, Babcock LGE’s commercial reach will not be limited to the engineering and delivery phases. The company seeks to maintain its involvement during the operation of the systems installed on the new LNG carriers.

Furthermore, the project strengthens Babcock LGE’s participation in the global VLGC market expanding its business in the design and supply of liquefied gas handling solutions, the agreement brings together a European company specializing in naval engineering, one of South Korea’s leading shipbuilders, and a shipowner that will incorporate four new large-capacity gas carriers. Samsung Heavy Industries is also involved in other projects related to ships and energy infrastructure. These include a floating unit of liquefied natural gas (FLNG) intended to operate in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, on the west coast of Canada.
