X-Energy Reactor Company ( X-energy ), a company specializing in the development of small modular nuclear reactors ( SMRs ) and advanced fuels, has successfully closed its Series C-1 financing round for a total of $700 million.
Amazon-powered Xe-100 reactor technology
The investment, backed by Amazon through its Climate Pledge Fund , along with Segra Capital Management , Jane Street , Ares Management , Emerson Collective and others, will enable the company to accelerate the design, licensing and construction of its Xe-100 reactors.
We are proud to have gained additional support from our industry, government and investor community since X-energy was founded over 15 years ago. We look forward to continuing to advance and expand our technology and realize our vision of meeting the growing energy needs of future generations.
Kam Ghaffarian, Founder and CEO of X-energy.
The funding will facilitate the development of the TRISO-X fuel fabrication facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and support the implementation of energy projects based on advanced SMR reactors and other related elements.
The Xe-100 reactor is designed to generate 80 megawatts of electricity per unit, with scalable configurations up to 960 MW. This modular design allows for efficient transportation and faster installation compared to today’s reactors.
In addition, the company’s TRISO-X fuel ensures greater operational safety and energy efficiency, contributing to grid stability and industrial decarbonization. Amazon and X-energy have entered into a partnership to develop more than five gigawatts of new energy projects in the United States by 2039.
The U.S. Department of Energy is supporting the advanced reactor demonstration program, enabling the company to carry out its first project at Dow UCC Seadrift Operations in Texas. This development will mark the first grid-scale deployment of an advanced nuclear reactor in North America, with the goal of achieving a continuous, emissions-free energy supply to industry.
