At the recent Connected Places Summit , held on March 20, 2025, Rux Energy and Serco announced the start of a joint collaboration to develop a hydrogen storage project. This progress was presented with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between senior executives of both companies, Dr. Jehan Kanga, founder and CEO of Rux Energy, and Michael Hayes, Director of Transformation and Programs at Serco.
The hydrogen storage project
The project, funded by the UK’s Connected Places Catapult program, focuses on improving the economic and operational viability of hydrogen as a fuel in maritime applications. This study relied on an advanced nanoporous material patented by Rux Energy that allows hydrogen to be stored at lower pressures and temperatures.
Rux Energy has made significant strides in addressing these issues with its patented technology, which improves storage efficiency and enables safer and more economical use in sectors such as maritime. This innovation has been validated through a techno-economic modeling study that demonstrated its viability as a competitive option compared to marine diesel , especially for short-distance workboats.
Furthermore, the study, carried out jointly with Serco, focused on the technical feasibility of hydrogen storage and the practical implications for the use of this clean energy in maritime applications. Furthermore, important aspects of the infrastructure required for a local supply of green hydrogen were evaluated, from its production to its distribution in ports and on vessels. The results showed that hydrogen can be an effective and viable long-term solution for decarbonizing the maritime sector, one of the most difficult to reduce in terms of emissions.
The collaboration between Rux Energy and Serco aims to pursue cleaner and more economical energy solutions. With the signing of the memorandum of understanding, both companies strengthen their commitment to decarbonization and the transition to more sustainable energy, aligning with the United Kingdom’s energy security and sustainability goals.
