In central South Korea, a municipality has launched an investigation after a “robot committed suicide”. It had been assisting in municipal work and strangely fell down the stairs.

According to an official from the municipal team, the robot had been performing administrative tasks at Gumi for about a year. Discovered last week, lying dormant at the foot of the stairs, witnesses reported that the robot appeared to be spinning before it fell, suggesting a possible malfunction.

Why did the robot commit suicide? Overwork or technical failure?

The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The parts of the robot have been recovered and will be analyzed by the company responsible for its design, the official said. In addition, another official expressed regret for what happened, pointing out that the robot was officially considered part of the municipality and valued as one of its collaborators.

Developed by Bear Robotics in California, the robot had working hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and possessed a utility card that allowed it to move between different floors using the elevator, unlike other robots limited to a single level.

The news has caught the attention of the local media, who wonder if the rigorous work may have been too much for this mechanical public servant.
