The Port of Houston has taken a key step in its operational evolution with the acquisition of 16 new Konecranes hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes , while eight existing units will undergo a comprehensive modernization process. This move aligns with its long-term growth strategy and commitment to port sustainability.

New hybrid cranes for the Port of Houston

Delivery of the new units is expected in the first half of 2026 and will join a fleet that already includes 163 RTGs, 73 of which will be hybrid after this addition. The eight existing cranes will receive advanced technical upgrades before the end of 2025, ensuring greater safety and extending their service life.

The hybrid cranes, designed for a 1-over-6 stacking configuration, integrate automated features such as power steering, collision avoidance, and truck-operated protection. These capabilities allow the port to reduce fuel consumption and emissions without sacrificing operational efficiency.

The modernizations will be carried out by the Konecranes Port Services team. They will include key improvements such as new energy chains, gantry collision avoidance systems, and automated steering, all adapted to the latest technological and safety standards.

This contract reaffirms the close relationship between the Port of Houston and Konecranes, whose technical support has been instrumental in maintaining smooth operations at one of the busiest container terminals in the United States. The investment is also part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, focused on low-impact solutions for material handling.

The evolution of Houston’s port infrastructure reflects a clear commitment to intelligent automation and carbon footprint reduction, in line with global trends in logistics efficiency and green transformation.
