OpenAI has released o3-mini , its latest AI model designed to improve reasoning in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines. Available in both the API and ChatGPT , this model promises improved accuracy and speed in solving technical and scientific problems.
o3-mini is a high performance and low cost model
o3-mini is an evolution of OpenAI’s series of reasoning models and is positioned as an optimized alternative for developers. Its main features include fast response and efficiency in data processing . Unlike its predecessor, o1-mini , this new model incorporates adjustment options in the reasoning effort, allowing its behavior to be adapted to different user needs.
In addition, OpenAI has expanded access to the model, allowing ChatGPT users in its free version to test its capabilities through the “Reason” option in the message composer. This marks a step forward in the democratization of advanced artificial intelligence tools.
Ideal for developers
One of the major new features of o3-mini is its support for advanced development features, such as function calling and structured output generation. These improvements facilitate the integration of the model into various applications, increasing its usefulness in production environments.
For ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, OpenAI has tripled the daily message limit, offering up to 150 interactions with this model . Additionally, Pro users will be able to access unrestricted o3-mini and its enhanced version, o3-mini-high, designed to provide even more accurate and detailed responses.
OpenAI has worked on the model’s safety using deliberative alignment techniques, reducing significant errors by 39% compared to its predecessor . There has also been a 56% increase in raters’ preference for its answers compared to those of previous models.
The model’s performance has been optimized to deliver faster response times. In A/B tests, o3-mini delivered responses 24% faster than o1-mini, averaging 7.7 seconds versus its predecessor’s 10.16 seconds.

OpenAI will continue to expand the availability of o3-mini in the coming weeks, including its integration into ChatGPT’s Enterprise plan. The company also continues to explore ways to reduce the cost of AI without compromising model quality.
