Microwave energy produces clean hydrogen, faster and with less energy

This research could optimize microwave-based chemical processes, improving hydrogen production in the future.

POSTECH ‘s interdisciplinary team has made progress in the production of clean hydrogen through a study focused on the use of microwaves, demonstrating the ability to transform chemical processes essential for renewable energy.

Using microwaves for the production of clean hydrogen

The team of researchers managed to reduce more than 60% of the temperature required in hydrogen production processes. By using ceria doped with gadolinium , an important material in this energy field, they discovered that microwaves replace 75% of the thermal energy needed to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Furthermore, this technology is the creation of ” oxygen gaps “, controlled defects in the molecular structure of the material that accelerate the splitting of water. While conventional processes can take hours at high temperatures, POSTECH ‘s approach allows the same result in minutes and at temperatures below 600 °C.

This achievement has been made possible by the collaboration between physicists, mechanical engineers and specialists in advanced nuclear engineering. The study was published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A , this study could pave the way for new materials optimized for microwave-based chemical processes, consolidating the role of hydrogen as the energy of the future.
