Iberdrola has begun the implementation of the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm in the United States , being the first project of this magnitude in the country. With a capacity of 806 MW, the park already supplies green energy to Massachusetts, providing electricity to more than 400,000 homes.

The investment of more than $3 billion is supported by contracts with the state’s main electric companies. The project, which is expected to be fully operational this year, will significantly contribute to the reduction of CO 2 emissions by more than 1.6 million tons annually.

Each of the turbines, whose transition pieces were made by the Asturian company Windar Renovables , has the capacity to supply energy to more than 6,000 homes and companies. Composed of a tower, three blades and a nacelle, these turbines have a nominal capacity of 13 MW, making them the largest in the Western world . In this way, a single rotation has the capacity to power a Massachusetts home for an entire day.

We are delivering the first clean offshore wind energy to the Massachusetts grid. We are at a defining moment for climate action in the United States, and we are experiencing a dawn for the country’s offshore wind industry. As the capacity of this historic project is brought to life, we will continue to support all the partners who have made this achievement possible.“said Pedro Azagra, the CEO of Avangrid, the US subsidiary of Iberdrola.

Last October, Avangrid and Danish investment group Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), co-owners of the project, reported that the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm had secured a $1.2 billion tax capital package. This achievement marked a milestone as the first package of its kind for commercial-scale offshore wind, with the participation of three US-based banks.

The participation of Windar Renovables

The Spanish company Windar Renovables manufactured the 62 bases of the wind turbines in a contract worth around 100 million euros, generating around 400 jobs.

On the other hand, the Italian Prysmian Group has completed the installation of the submarine cable system that will connect the offshore wind farm with the continental electrical grid of the United States, using more than 134 km of high-voltage alternating current electrical cable. Simultaneously, the American company Southwire has been responsible for the design, manufacturing and installation of more than 51 km of terrestrial high-voltage cable.

The installation of the offshore substation, which will serve the needs of the entire Vineyard Wind 1 project, was completed in July 2023. This is the first substation of this category established by Iberdrola in the United States and the sixth worldwide. With a weight that exceeds 5,000 tons, it is the largest ever installed by the company in its history.
