ABB has achieved a remarkable 80% reduction in its CO₂ emissions at its plant in Saltillo, Mexico, in just two years. This progress is part of its commitment and vision of its “Mission to Zero” program with the goal of achieving zero emissions through the implementation of technologies.
The Saltillo plant and its implementation of solar energy
The Saltillo plant’s progress was driven by the adoption of solar photovoltaic energy and energy optimization by implementing smart building models. The installation of more than 1,000 photovoltaic panels generates up to approximately 980 MWh per year, which covers 10% of the plant’s energy needs.
In addition, the use of ABB Ability Energy Manager technology has enabled detailed analysis of energy consumption patterns, helping to optimize electricity use in real time and improve energy efficiency, even with fluctuations in demand.
Furthermore, the plant has managed to eliminate the use of artificial lighting during daytime shifts by installing skylights on the roof, which has saved around 1,800 MWh per year. This has been complemented by the installation of LED lighting and external photovoltaic systems, improving efficiency and reducing electricity consumption.
Water conservation initiatives have also been promoted. The state of Coahuila has one of the highest levels of water stress in Mexico. For this reason, the company directs more than 60% of the water consumed to treatment and reuse in gardening facilities, contributing to the mitigation of water scarcity in the region.
ABB Electrification ‘s president of smart buildings division, Mike Mustapha, underlined the move towards sustainability, noting: “Our Saltillo facility is making progress toward achieving the goals set out in our Mission to Zero program, demonstrating our commitment to a sustainable and resource-friendly future. Our local team’s sustainability efforts are a strong example of how smart buildings can achieve the dual outcome of cost savings and sustainability, while improving the safety and comfort of their inhabitants. “
With more than 140 years of history, ABB remains a leader in the electrification and automation industry, collaborating with its customers to overcome global challenges and build a more sustainable future. With a strong presence in more than 100 countries, the company continues to demonstrate how technological innovation can contribute to efficiency and sustainability in industrial operations.
