Finnish technology group Wärtsilä announced a new investment of approximately 90 million euros to expand its technical production capacity by an additional 30% at the Sustainable Technology Hub (STH) in Vaasa, Finland, and across its associated global supply chain.
The expansion adds to the 35% capacity increase previously announced in February 2026, raising the total projected growth to 65% compared to 2025 technical production levels.
Wärtsilä Responds to Increased Energy and Maritime Demand
The company explained that the investment will enable increased engine production to meet growing demand in the energy and maritime sectors.
According to Wärtsilä, the growth in electricity consumption, accelerated expansion of data centers, and decarbonization regulations are driving the need for more efficient and flexible energy solutions.
Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä, noted that the company seeks to strengthen its capacity to respond to changes in the global market.
“Our customers turn to us for flexible and energy-efficient engine technologies to meet their constantly evolving energy needs,” stated Agnevall.
Sustainable Technology Hub to Expand Offshore and Energy Production
The Sustainable Technology Hub (STH), inaugurated in 2022 in Vaasa, currently operates with a surface area of 90,000 square meters and more than 3,800 specialized employees.
The facility functions as a global center for innovation, collaboration, and advanced manufacturing for Wärtsilä’s marine engines and energy systems.
The complex produces all engine types in the company’s catalog and also operates: specialized technical training centers, R and engine testing facilities, remote monitoring centers for global customers.
The new expansion will include more than 11,000 additional square meters, with operations scheduled to begin in early 2028.
Cumulative Investment Exceeds 490 Million Euros
Since 2018, when Wärtsilä announced the creation of the STH, the company has invested more than 490 million euros in the technology complex.
Recent investments include:
- 50 million euros for expansion of R capabilities announced in 2025.
- New offices inaugurated in 2026.
- 230 million euros allocated to production capacity expansion and supply chain during 2026.
The previously announced 35% expansion will become operational during the first quarter of 2028, while the new additional 30% increase will be operational in the first quarter of 2029.
Wärtsilä Drives Decarbonization Objectives
The Sustainable Technology Hub is also part of Wärtsilä’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030.
The facility was designed to operate with energy self-sufficiency, generating electricity and heat internally.
Surplus energy is returned to the electrical grid, while heat produced during engine testing is stored and reused for efficient heating of the complex.
The company considers that the expansion will strengthen its global position in energy solutions and decarbonization technologies for the maritime and industrial sectors.
