TGS announced the acquisition of Apparition Geoservices GmbH, securing exclusive access to its patented simultaneous seismic acquisition and source separation technology.
The operation strengthens the Norwegian company’s technology portfolio and expands its capabilities for high-efficiency marine surveys.
Apparition’s technology will be integrated with Gemini Enhanced Frequency Source, a TGS solution aimed at improving source capacity, operational efficiency, and the clarity of subsurface images.
Apparition improves seismic acquisition
Apparition is an advanced seismic acquisition and processing methodology that allows multiple sound sources to be operated simultaneously in a coordinated and controlled manner.
Unlike traditional random activation or blending methods, this technology uses precise synchronization to encode sources distinctively. This facilitates the subsequent separation of overlapping signals and improves processing quality.
The result is greater efficiency in seismic acquisition, increased source capacity, and consistent high-quality data for geophysical interpretation.
Tests report up to 30% efficiency
Over the past two years, TGS tested Apparition in different acquisition configurations and marine environments, in collaboration with the Apparition team and key clients.
The tests included a Hexa source configuration, designed to increase acquisition efficiency and improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
According to TGS, the results showed operational efficiency improvements of up to 30%, along with sharper signal recovery, better low-frequency performance, and greater visibility of deep and complex sub-surface targets.
OBN and streamer applications
The integration of Apparition into acquisition and imaging workflows will allow TGS to offer multi-source and multi-component seismic programs for ocean bottom node (OBN) surveys, towed seismic streamers, and ultra-high-resolution 3D surveys.
For clients, this can translate into more cost-effective surveys, shorter execution times, and greater confidence in exploration decisions, field development, and subsurface characterization.
In 2023, TGS had already established an exclusive collaboration agreement with Apparition to develop and commercialize this methodology in OBN, streamer, and XHR programs, with the goal of increasing efficiency and trace density.
TGS reinforces its technology platform
Carel Hooijkaas, Executive Vice President of Marine Data Acquisition at TGS, noted that the acquisition strengthens the company’s technology portfolio and enhances its ability to deliver tangible value to clients.
The executive indicated that Apparition is essential to TGS’s multi-source strategy and data integration. By combining this technology with Gemini and the Ramform fleet, the company aims to increase efficiency, expand source capacity, and improve data quality.
With this acquisition, TGS consolidates a technology platform aimed at reducing project timelines, optimizing costs, and improving decision-making in energy exploration, resource development, and the evaluation of complex subsurface targets.
