The Deputy Prime Minister, Sara Aagesen, has announced the provisional allocation of €670 million from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) to accelerate the energy transition in Spain. The funding will be distributed among offshore wind projects, energy storage, the renewable energy value chain, and electric mobility.
This aid package, managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), seeks to strengthen electrification and reduce dependence on fossil fuels in various strategic sectors.
Strategic ports for offshore wind energy
First, a significant portion of the funds will be allocated to adapting port infrastructure for the development of offshore wind energy. In total, six ports will receive €212 million to improve their logistical capabilities.
Among them are A Coruña and Ferrol, whose joint project accounts for a significant portion of the investment, aligned with the development of offshore wind in the north of the country. Likewise, facilities in Tarragona, Castellón, Gijón, and Las Palmas will be modernized to facilitate the assembly, maintenance, and transport of wind turbines.
The goal is to consolidate these sites as industrial bases for future offshore installations, including floating platforms and large structures.
Boosting the energy transition
On the other hand, the Government is strengthening energy storage through pumped storage systems. The second call for proposals under the BORALMAC II program has reached €165 million following its expansion.
The funds will benefit seven projects located in regions such as Galicia, Asturias, Andalusia, Extremadura, and Catalonia. These initiatives will improve the management of renewable energy and ensure the stability of the electricity system.
In addition, another €165 million has been allocated to 41 projects linked to the clean technology value chain. These initiatives include battery development, components for electrical grids, hydrogen, and solar energy.
The Basque Country leads in the number of projects, while Navarre stands out for having one of the largest individual grants for energy storage. These investments aim to strengthen national industry and foster new production capabilities.
More than 3,000 charging points for electric mobility
In the area of sustainable mobility, the Moves program will allocate more than 100 million euros to the installation of charging infrastructure and electrification of transport.
The installation of approximately 2,880 charging points is planned along main corridors, along with incentives for business fleets that will incorporate thousands of electric vehicles.
Finally, the Renocogen program will receive €21 million to promote electricity and heat generation projects using renewable sources. These initiatives will allow for the replacement of fossil fuel-based systems in various regions.
During the announcement, Aagesen stressed that the commitment to the energy transition remains firm, highlighting its role in the country’s economic growth, job creation and industrial development.
