Rosatom has begun loading nuclear fuel into Unit 1 of the Rooppur nuclear power plant, located about 160 kilometers from Dhaka. This stage represents the first step in the reactor commissioning process, considered one of the most important moments in the construction of a nuclear power plant .

During the event, authorities from both nations symbolically authorized the start of the process. The operation involves the introduction of fuel assemblies into the reactor, a necessary step before reaching the minimum controlled power level.

Technical process towards electricity generation

After refueling, the reactor will be brought to the minimum controlled level, where the nuclear reaction stabilizes under safe conditions. Subsequently, power will be gradually increased to reach operational levels.

Likewise, the final phase includes synchronization with the national electricity grid, at which point the power plant will begin supplying electricity to the Bangladesh energy system.

VVER-1200 technology and safety standards

The facility uses VVER-1200 reactors , a Generation III+ design developed by Rosatom. This type of reactor meets international safety standards and is already in operation in several countries, including Russia and Belarus.

With a total projected capacity of 2400 MW across its two units, the Rooppur power plant is positioned as a strategic infrastructure for the country’s electricity generation.

Impact on Bangladesh’s energy security

The project reinforces Bangladesh’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels . Local authorities emphasize that the peaceful use of nuclear energy will boost industrialization and strengthen a technology-based economy.

In this context, the nuclear power plant is emerging as a key component to guarantee a stable and sustainable long-term electricity supply.

An international project led by Rosatom

Rosatom, the Russian state-owned nuclear energy corporation, is acting as the lead contractor and designer of the project. The company is leading numerous nuclear developments globally and maintains a broad portfolio of international projects.

Likewise, the Rooppur plant is part of a broader strategy to expand Russian nuclear technology in emerging markets, consolidating its presence in Asia and other regions.
