The Government of Canada has approved Enbridge’s Sunrise Expansion Program, a $4 billion energy infrastructure project that seeks to expand the capacity of the pipeline system on British Columbia’s west coast.
According to the company, this natural gas pipeline expansion has been deemed to be in the public interest due to its impact on energy security and supply during periods of high demand.
Fundamental increase in transport capacity
Specifically, the project will add nearly 300 million cubic feet per day to natural gas transportation capacity. natural gas on the southern leg of the Westcoast system. This improvement will strengthen access to energy at critical times, especially in residential, commercial and institutional sectors.
Transported natural gas will also be essential for heating homes, hospitals, schools and businesses, as well as supporting power generation and industrial activity in the region. It will also play an important role in global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports .
Economic Impact and Job Creation
Moreover, the Sunrise Program could contribute more than US$3 billion to the Canadian economy. During the construction phase, scheduled to begin in July 2026, approximately 2,500 workers are expected to be hired.
In parallel, Enbridge has allocated more than $52 million to contracting indigenous services and companies, strengthening the participation of local communities in the development of the project.
Technical scope of the project
The development contemplates the construction of new pipeline sections alongside the existing system, as well as the incorporation of additional gas compression and the modernization of existing facilities.
These improvements aim to optimize system performance and ensure more efficient operation in the face of growing energy demand in British Columbia.
Institutional support and energy vision
From Enbridge, its CEO Greg Ebel stressed that the project represents a breakthrough in the country’s energy strategy, underscoring its role in the country’s energy security and economic growth.
Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, said that the approval will help to expand energy supply, stabilize prices and strengthen international trade.
Provincial authorities have also supported the initiative, highlighting its contribution to industrial development, electricity generation and the strengthening of Canada as an energy supplier.
Timeline and start-up
Finally, construction of the project will begin in July 2026 and is expected to start operations by the end of 2028, marking a new advance in the country’s natural gas transportation infrastructure.
