ABB announced the acquisition of the Italian company Specialtrasfo SpA, a manufacturer of specialized medium-voltage transformers used in critical industrial applications. The transaction will allow the company to expand its offering of integrated electrical systems and strengthen its responsiveness to the growing global demand of energy infrastructure.
The acquisition will be integrated into ABB’s Motion High Power division and is subject to customary regulatory approvals. The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2026.
ABB will integrate specialized transformers into its industrial offering
Currently, the company has a strong presence in industrial motors, variable speed drives and electric propulsion systems. With the acquisition of Specialtrasfo, the company will add transformers, converters, and rectifiers designed for demanding industrial applications.
These devices optimize energy conversion and improve the performance of electrical systems used in sectors such as:
- mining
- metallurgy
- energy
- maritime
- offshore
- industrial processing
The company believes this strategy will strengthen the competitiveness of its offering and reduce dependence on external suppliers in a context of high global demand for electrical transformers.
Global energy demand drives new investments
The operation comes at a time marked by accelerated growth in global electricity consumption. According to forecasts by the International Energy Agency, electricity demand could double by 2050, driven by:
- data center expansion
- artificial intelligence
- industrial electrification
- energy transition
This situation has increased pressure on electrical infrastructure manufacturers, and especially on the industrial transformer market. The company believes that having its own production of specialized transformers will improve the resilience of its supply chain and accelerate delivery times for industrial customers.
What does Specialtrasfo bring to ABB?
Specialtrasfo was founded in 1946 and is headquartered in Agrate Brianza, near Milan. It has approximately 130 employees and operates three manufacturing plants in northern Italy. Its technology is present in more than 70 countries, and its business focuses on medium-voltage transformers designed for complex industrial applications.
During 2025, the company recorded revenues of nearly €80 million. Approximately half of that revenue was already linked to the company through joint projects and integrated solutions.
For ABB, this prior relationship represents a strategic advantage because both companies have already maintained technical and commercial cooperation for years.
A commitment to vertical integration in electrical infrastructure
The acquisition reflects a growing trend among large industrial companies seeking to control key components of their electrical supply chains. Instead of relying entirely on external suppliers, many companies are moving toward vertically integrated models to ensure the availability of critical equipment and maintain competitiveness in the face of increasing energy demand.
ABB believes this transaction will strengthen its position as a provider of integrated high-power electrical solutions and expand its ability to serve industries that require more efficient and reliable energy systems.
