With a price that defies current standards, BYD’s Seagull electric vehicle reached record sales of more than 360,000 units in less than a year. This impressive figure was reached after nearly 35,000 units of the model were sold in March.

The impressive price of BYD’s electric vehicle

The Seagull establishes BYD’s entry into the affordable electric vehicle segment. Initially available in three variants, with prices starting at $10,200, this model is the most economical option within the BYD range.

The standard model of the Seagull promises a range of up to approximately 300 km, while its longer-range variant can exceed 400 km. This sales success led BYD to introduce an even more affordable version last month, outselling other popular models such as the Dolphin and Atto 3.

The competitive cost has captured the attention of many, the new Seagull EV Honor Edition was launched with a starting cost of just 69,800 yuan, or about $9,700, offering two battery options that allow for a range of 400 km.

This vehicle has generated considerable interest in international markets, where it is being promoted as a mini version of the Dolphin. In Brazil, the Seagull debuted with a starting price close to $20,000, and there are plans to expand to additional markets such as the United Kingdom, where it could become the most affordable electric vehicle in the world. .

Seagull electric vehicle expectations

According to Mark Blundell, BYD’s UK marketing director, the company strives to make electric vehicles accessible to a wider audience by focusing on keeping prices low and performance high.

In a more global view, BYD has managed to sell more than 300,000 electric vehicles in the first three months of the year, registering an annual growth of 13%. Despite these impressive numbers, Tesla still leads with 386,810 electric vehicles delivered in the first quarter of 2024.
