Global data company TGS has begun reprocessing the Sunfish 3D seismic survey in the Harper basin, offshore Liberia. This technical procedure marks further progress in preparation for offshore exploration activities on the western margin of Africa.
Sunfish 3D seismic reprocessing to improve geological quality
The Sunfish survey, originally acquired in 2013, covers approximately 6100 square kilometers. The current upgrade integrates modern geophysical geophysical processingsuch as Kirchhoff prestack depth migration, to generate more accurate and detailed seismic images of the subsurface. This enhanced process is designed to preserve AVO fidelity, an essential factor in reliable reservoir characterization.
TGS is also developing this project in partnership with the National Oil Company of Liberia(NOCAL) as part of a multiyear campaign to enhance all available 2D and 3D seismic data in the region. Once completed, more than 50,000 kilometers of 2D seismic and more than 31,000 square kilometers of 3D seismic will have been reprocessed, providing operating companies with a solid basis for informed decisions.
The Harper basin is considered a geologically promising, but as yet underexplored area. With delivery of final products expected in the third quarter of 2026, the new dataset aims to facilitate the use of advanced workflows in the prospective evaluation of Upper Cretaceous structures, a key step in the search for hydrocarbons.
