QatarEnergy has outlined ambitions to raise LNG (liquefied natural gas) production from its North Field to 142 million tons per year by the end of this decade. This strategic plan seeks to increase Qatari LNG production capacity by at least 16 million tons per year.

Last week, the company announced its intention to carry out the North Field West expansion project, with the objective of boosting the production capacity of LNG from Qatar to 142 million tons per year by 2030. “This would mean an increase of close to 85% over current production levels.“Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy, noted.

North Field LNG production

The North Field, which together with the adjacent South Pars in the Persian Gulf constitutes the world’s largest non-associated natural gas field, is shared between Qatar and Iran. “After extensive drilling and evaluation, we have confirmed that the productive layers of the North Field extend to the west, allowing us to develop a new LNG project at Ras Laffan.“, Al Kaabi explained.

This analysis has revealed the existence of significant additional quantities of gas in the North Field, estimated at 240 trillion cubic feet, raising the gas reserves from 1,760 to more than 2,000 tcf and condensate reserves from 70 to more than 80 billion barrels.

With the completion of the North Field West project, QatarEnergy anticipates that “Qatar’s total hydrocarbon production will exceed 7.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.” The company has announced that it will “immediately commence basic engineering work” to ensure the planned progress of the North Field West project.

Expansion projects underway

Qatar is already implementing two expansion phases in this vast gas field, known as North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS), with a combined estimated cost of more than $50 billion. These phases seek to raise Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tpa to 126 million tpa by 2026, involving the construction of six mega-trains with a capacity of 8 million tpa each, distributed between the NFE and NFS projects.

Last year, the company announced the start of construction of the North Field expansion, noting “impressive” progress on the project. The Qatari state-owned company has formed alliances with TotalEnergies, Shell, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Eni, Sinopec and China National Petroleum Corporation for the first two phases of expansion and anticipates attracting additional partners for this new stage of development.

The importance of the Northern Field for global energy security

The expansion of the North Field underscores not only Qatar’s commitment to leadership in the global LNG market, but also the strategic importance of this field to global energy security. By significantly increasing its LNG production capacity, Qatar not only secures its position as a key energy supplier, but also contributes to the stability of international energy markets.

This project reflects how investments in natural resources can be a pillar for sustainable development and global energy cooperation, at a time when demand for clean and reliable energy sources is on the rise.
