ExxonMobil, a United States energy company, announced its oil exploitation plan in Block 15, located in Angolan waters. In addition, it has consolidated an agreement with the National Agency for Oil, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) of Angola by signing a letter that promotes the recovery of additional exploration costs.

What was the key to oil exploitation in Angola?

The Likembe-01 well, located 1,200 meters below the sea surface in the Kizomba B development zone of Block 15, has been the key to this new discovery for ExxonMobil. Operated together with partners such as Azule Energy, Equinor and Sonangol, this well was drilled from February to April 2024. Reaching a total depth of 3,013 meters , it has crossed Miocene geological formations, confirming the presence of crude oil in the region.

Additionally, the ANPG has highlighted that Likembe-01 is the first well drilled under the agreements of the production increase project, which seeks to motivate investors to exploit additional volumes of oil in areas already in production.. This strategy is essential for the continued and sustainable development of the oil sector in Angola, supervised by the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (MIREMPET).

In an effort to expand exploration, Paulino Jerónimo, president of the ANPG Board of Directors, and Katrina Fisher, CEO of ExxonMobil, signed the agreement on May 7 in Luanda. The event was attended by several managers and experts from the sector, including the executive directors of the ANPG, Alcides Andrade, Nicola Mvuayi and Ana Miala.

Angola targets through ExxonMobil

This project seeks to maximize hydrocarbon recovery in active concessions and expand economic interest in mature fields and areas not yet developed. New exploration operations in Block 15 are expected to help offset the decline in current production, identifying additional commercially and economically viable resources.

Recently, ExxonMobil extended its contract with the Valaris DS-9 drillship to continue operations in Angola from January 2025. This indicates a long-term commitment to the region and the possibility of further oil exploration, underscoring the strategic importance of Angola in ExxonMobil’s global expansion plans.
