After the implosion of the Titan submersible a few weeks ago, the American underwater exploration company OceanGate has announced the suspension of all its operations, both commercial and exploration.
OceanGate had been operating for fourteen years and was dedicated to conducting scientific and tourist explorations towards the remains of the Titanic. Unfortunately, the accident in which the five people on board lost their lives has led the company to make the decision.
Despite the fact that videos of equipment and expeditions continue to appear on the website, as well as descriptions of the expeditions offered, including visits to the remains of the Titanic, the following message can be seen in the upper left part of its official web portal :
“OceanGate has suspended all commercial and exploration operations”
So far, OceanGate has not provided any further information on the specific reasons behind this determination and has declined any communication with the media. However, in the last two weeks, the company has been the subject of harsh criticism due to possible anomalies in the submersible’s structure, which has generated concern, questions and great controversy regarding the safety of its operations.
OceanGate continues to be investigated
The US Coast Guard, which led the initial rescue operation when the submersible was reported missing, is in charge of conducting the investigation to determine the causes of the incident.
The creation of the Marine Board of Research (MBI), headed by Jason Neubauer, involves a high level of research and requires a significant investment of resources. However, it is not yet clear who will be responsible for bearing these costs.
In addition, the board has the power to ask authorities to consider imposing civil or criminal penalties on those responsible if it is determined that the accident was caused by negligence during Titan’s construction.
Given the complexity of the investigation, the Department of Homeland Security of the United States has indicated that it is possible that it will last at least a year, in order to obtain conclusions that clarify what happened and avoid the repetition of a similar situation in the future.
