The company Neoenergia, Iberdrola’s branch dedicated to this field, has implemented a novel sensor with floating LiDAR technology on the north coast of Rio de Janeiro.
Accurate collection of marine information
This innovative system, known as LiDAR, will be deployed about 40 kilometers offshore to collect critical data on wind and sea conditions in the region. In addition to measuring wind, this device will provide valuable information on ocean currents, waves, water temperature, pressure and humidity.
Neoenergia assures that this technology will allow them to access detailed reports on weather and ocean conditions in real time through satellite and Internet connections, which will give them an accurate and updated view of the conditions in the area.
The equipment was deployed from the Porto do Açu dock, in São João da Barra (RJ), to its offshore position, with the collaboration of Fugro BR, a company specialized in wind resource and ocean parameter measurement services. wind resources and ocean parameters .
The scope of floating LiDAR technology
The logistical support required for this operation was provided by Prumo Logistica, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Neoenergia in 2022, focused on research related to green hydrogen and offshore wind energy.
These advances come at a time when Neoenergia is broadening its horizons, as evidenced by the recent signing of an MoU with the government of Rio de Janeiro to explore offshore wind projects in the region.
In addition, the company is currently evaluating the feasibility of developing similar projects in other states such as Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará, taking advantage of its current installed capacity of 4 GW, 88% of which comes from renewable sources.
