The Hapag-Lloyd deal

The Chilean company SAAM has completed the sale of its port terminals and logistics operations to Hapag-Lloyd for a value of 995 million dollars, following a purchase agreement signed in October 2022 and after obtaining the approval of the antitrust authorities of the countries involved in the operation.

This transaction includes the acquisition by Hapag-Lloyd of the Terminal Marítima Mazatlán (TMAZ), located in the state of Sinaloa. This terminal is dedicated to the operation of containers and steel, and has become a crucial point for importing cars from China due to the saturation faced by the port of Lázaro Cárdenas.

In November 2022, both companies notified the Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece) of their intention to carry out the concentration, and after the corresponding review, Cofece concluded that the operation would be unlikely to affect free competition and economic competition. . Finally, at the end of June of this year, Cofece announced that it had authorized the operation.

The signing of the transfer of assets from SAAM to Hapag-Lloyd took place in the city of Santiago. This transaction includes the sale of port terminals in several countries, such as Chile, the United States, Costa Rica, Colombia and Ecuador, as well as extra-port warehouses and logistics operations in Chile, according to information provided by the company.

Regarding the maritime tugboat business, it will remain within SAAM, operating 210 vessels that provide services in 90 ports in 13 countries, including Mexico, in the ports of Lázaro Cárdenas, Altamira, Tampico, Tuxpan, Veracruz, Dos Bocas and Topolobampo.

SAAM’s general manager, Macario Valdés, said that the company will start a new stage with a focus on two business areas with growth opportunities. The aim is to boost the tugboat business to expand into new markets and become world leaders in this sector. Likewise, Aerosan, a group company that provides air logistics services at eight airports in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, is expected to increase its regional presence through an acquisition plan in Latin America.

Hapag-Lloyd has highlighted that investing in terminal infrastructure is a priority within its strategic agenda and Latin America is one of the key markets for the company. Recent terminal acquisitions, such as the one made to SAAM, will further strengthen their core liner shipping business and allow them to build a strong and attractive terminal portfolio.

According to the consulting firm Alphaliner, Hapag-Lloyd is positioned as the fifth largest shipping company in the world , with a fleet of 1,862,282 20-foot equivalent containers (TEU) and 258 vessels. In Mexico, the company operates five services in six ports and recently christened its vessel ‘Rio de Janeiro Express’ in the port of Manzanillo, a container ship with a capacity of more than 13,000 TEU.
