CMA CGM and SUEZ have joined forces after signing a memorandum of understanding ( MOU ) in October, with the aims of boosting biomethane production and accelerating the transition to low-carbon emissions in maritime transport.
Biomethane production between CMA CGM and SUEZ
This strategic agreement lays the foundation for a long-term collaboration in the development of renewable biofuels , highlighting the commitment of both companies to sustainability and energy independence in Europe.
This collaboration will focus on three key areas. Firstly , SUEZ will supply up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane per year by 2030. This biofuel will be used on CMA CGM ships with gas propulsion technology, thus promoting the decarbonisation of European shipping routes.
Secondly , both companies have agreed to establish a joint investment structure, with an initial investment of 100 million euros in a first phase until 2030, aimed at the construction of biomethane production facilities in Europe, with the aim of supplying CMA CGM and other major companies in the maritime sector.
Finally, thirdly , research and development initiatives will be promoted for innovation in sustainable biofuel production technologies, including advanced hydrothermal gasification methods.
Rodolphe Saadé, President and CEO of CMA CGM , stressed that this partnership reinforces Europe’s energy independence, a critical factor for the continent’s sovereignty. The collaboration also strengthens the group’s commitment to sustainability, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
For her part, Sabrina Soussan, President of SUEZ , expressed her enthusiasm for partnering with CMA CGM in this pioneering effort, assuring that biomethane will be an essential resource in the energy transition of the transport sector.
