Wärtsilä promotes new ammonia vessels with dual fuel technology

Two ammonia tankers will incorporate Wärtsilä systems to operate on clean fuel and reduce emissions in maritime transport.

In a further step towards the energy transition, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has been selected to provide the technology for two new ships that will transport liquid ammonia. These ships are being built in China and will belong to joint venture between Navigator Gas (USA) and Amon Maritime (Norway).

These vessels, with a capacity of 51,350 m³, will be designed to transport both liquid ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas and. They will be able to run on ammonia as fuel not just transport it.

Why is it relevant?

Ammonia is considered a carbon-free marine fuel and in a shipping sector that is looking decarbonize. Using it in engines is a great alternative to traditional petroleum. Wärtsilä will supply two systems:

  1. Cargo handling (how to load/unload ammonia).
  2. Fuel gas supply (how to power engines with ammonia).

These systems will allow ships to use dual fuel engines.

The role of ammonia in the maritime future

The development of these vessels reflects a structural change in the shipbuilding industry. As the sector moves towards alternative fuels. Ammonia is emerging as a key option for reducing the carbon footprint without compromising operational efficiency.

This project adds to a growing portfolio of initiatives that seek to transform maritime transport into a more sustainable model aligned with global climate goals.
