Uniper expanded its electricity supply offering to include medium-sized companies that consume at least one million kWh per year, a measure aimed at diversifying its commercial reach and serving organizations that require flexible formulas to cover their long-term operational needs.
Uniper is targeting the electricity market for medium-sized companies
Uniper expanded its electricity business with a new offer aimed at companies with an annual consumption of at least 1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) with this initiative, the German energy company seeks to facilitate access for medium-sized companies to professional electricity contracting systems. The company proposes modular solutions that allow for clearer management of energy purchases in the face of market volatility. Energy costs and the increasing complexity of contracting models have become key factors in these companies’ planning.
Therefore, the proposal aims to allow customers to choose supply structures that meet their needs. Some companies prioritize cost predictability, while others seek simpler processes or greater control over their electricity purchases. Nils Beenen, managing director of Uniper Energy sales GmbH pointed out that medium-sized companies play an important role in both the energy transition and European economic stability. In their view, the increasing complexity of electricity procurement makes it difficult to compare available alternatives.
The energy company seeks to simplify electricity contracting
With this expansion, Uniper aims to transfer some of its experience with large industrial clients to smaller companies. The company has expertise in power generation, energy trading, and supply to industrial customers. It also maintains significant operations in Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
Uniper has approximately 18.5 GW of capacity electricity generation it supplies energy and services to approximately 1,000 municipalities and industrial companies in Germany. Furthermore, the new strategy allows it to expand its customer base at a time when security of supply, price volatility, and energy planning are playing an increasingly important role in business decisions.
Uniper is preparing data centers in more than 10 plants
The expansion of the business with medium-sized companies coincides with other growth projects, Uniper has identified more than 10 generation facilities whose infrastructure could allow for the integration of data centers at the same locations. These facilities are located near European data corridors, and the projects have reached an advanced stage of development. The company anticipates making further investment decisions throughout the remainder of 2026. The strategy allows for linking existing energy assets with an activity characterized by high electricity demand. Data centers require a constant energy supply and infrastructure capable of supporting large loads.
Uniper plans to invest around 5 billion euros in Europe
On the other hand, the company is considering investments close to 5 billion euros between 2025 and 2030 in Europe. More than half of that capital is earmarked for Germany. The program includes investments in flexible generation, renewable energy, and expanding the gas supply portfolio. The strategy aims to strengthen the company’s ability to provide a energy supply safe and predictable in Europe.
The energy company’s financial position provides room to develop these plans, Uniper reported an operating cash flow of 1.982 billion euros and an economic net cash position of 4.548 billion euros. Christian Barr Uniper’s chief financial officer indicated that the company has approximately 12 billion euros of net worth, which allows it to finance its investment program with its own resources.
Electricity sales declined during the first half of the year
While moving forward with its expansion plans, Uniper sold 61.6 billion kWh of electricity during the first half of 2026, compared to 65.1 billion kWh recorded in the same period of 2025. Its electricity purchases and own generation reached 62.5 billion kWh between January and June 2026. In the first half of the previous year they had reached 66.1 billion kWh.
Thus, the incorporation of medium-sized companies opens another commercial front for Uniper while the company develops investments in generation, renewable energies and infrastructure linked to data centers.
