Saipem expands its involvement in the development of the Sakarya gas field with a new contract for the commissioning of the Osman Gazi Floating Production Unit (FPU) in Turkey’s Black Sea, the company secured a contract from GOE Petrol Sanayi to carry out the commissioning services for the Osman Gazi FPU, intended for the development of the Sakarya gas field in Turkey. According to Saipem, the work will last approximately eight months, this award strengthens its participation in one of the most important projects for natural gas production in the country and complements the operational readiness and warranty support services contract obtained in April 2026.
Saipem will implement the FPU Osman Gazi
For its part, the scope of the new contract focuses on the commissioning of the Osman Gazi FPU, Saipem plans to carry out these activities by applying its technical expertise in preparing complex energy facilities before they become operational, the unit will be linked to the development of Sakarya, discovered in August 2020 and operated by Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO). The field is located approximately 170 kilometers from the Turkish Black Sea coast in an area where the water depth reaches around 2,150 meters, the contract thus incorporates Saipem into a new stage of preparing the infrastructure intended to exploit one of the main natural gas resources discovered by Turkey in recent years.
The Sakarya field has several offshore contracts
Furthermore, Saipem’s involvement in Sakarya extends beyond services related to the FPU Osman Gazi, in May 2023, Turkish Petroleum awarded a contract to a consortium comprised of SLB, Subsea7 and Saipem an EPCI contract corresponding to the second phase of field development.
This scope includes subsea production systems (SPS), subsea umbilicals, risers and flow lines, components usually grouped under the SURF concept, these facilities are part of the infrastructure needed to transport production from systems installed in deep water.
The experience accumulated in the different phases of Sakarya keeps Saipem linked to work that covers underwater infrastructure, engineering, installation and preparation of facilities for their future operation.
Goktepe will connect with phase 3 of Sakarya
Subsequently, at the end of 2025, Saipem obtained another contract related to the expansion of the third phase of the project, the work includes the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of three additional gas pipelines and their corresponding subsea structures.
In total, these pipelines will have an approximate length of 153 kilometers, their function will be to connect the new natural gas reserve discovered in the Goktepe field with the facilities corresponding to phase 3 of Sakarya.
Therefore, the contract for the FPU Osman Gazi adds to a chain of projects that keeps Saipem closely linked to the offshore development of Sakarya; the commissioning of the unit now incorporates a new activity within the infrastructure intended to expand natural gas production capacity in the Turkish Black Sea.
