Morlais promotes tidal energy after crucial regulatory approval

Regulatory approval allows progress in the deployment of tidal power technology in the Morlais project in Wales.

The recent approval of a marine license amendment marks a new initiative for the development of tidal energy at the Morlais project, located off the coast of Ynys Môn, in Wales.

Specifically, Natural Resources Wales has approved the application submitted by Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, allowing it to expand the scope of its existing license. This decision enables the deployment of various tidal power technologies within the project’s operational area.

A crucial step for tidal power technology

Likewise, the modification is directly linked to the devices developed by Tidal Technologies Ltd, which facilitates its implementation in the marine environment of Morlais.

The project is positioned as a shared site where multiple technologies can operate under a single permit. This model aims to accelerate the technical and commercial validation of marine energy solutions under real-world conditions.

Andy Billcliff, CEO of Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, emphasized that the decision allows the project to maintain its pace and bring the installation of devices closer to the sea. He also stressed that this progress strengthens the development of the tidal energy sector in Wales.

Support for the CfD scheme and development of the sector

On the other hand, Tidal Technologies is one of the five developers that have secured capacity on Morlais through the UK Government’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) program.

Earlier this year, the company obtained 3 MW in the seventh allocation round, a mechanism that guarantees long-term income for low-carbon electricity generation projects.

Jim Conybeare-Cross, from the company, noted that the license change represents a significant step forward in starting the next phase of the project and enabling new opportunities for technological improvement.

A strategic project for clean energy

Morlais is currently considered one of the largest authorized tidal energy projects globally. Its goal is to harness the power of the tides to generate clean electricity sustainably.

With a potential capacity of up to 240 MW, the project anticipates the installation of its first turbines in 2027. This development positions Wales as a key player in the transition to marine renewable energy.

Going forward, the evolution of Morlais will be crucial to demonstrating the commercial viability of tidal energy and its integration into the UK’s energy mix.
