Helms Geomarine Sdn Bhd (HELMS) announced the successful completion of an offshore geotechnical investigation campaign for Sarawak Shell Berhad (SHELL) in Sarawak waters, Malaysia. The operation was carried out safely and ahead of schedule using the vessel DP2 Keyfield Helms 1.
The campaign included seabed drilling, ocean floor sampling, and cone penetration testing in wells for future offshore platform installations and jack-up launch locations. The project also incorporated subsea CPT investigations to evaluate mudmat foundations using HELMS’ Neptune 5000 Seabed CPT system.
Offshore operations with a focus on safety and efficiency
Throughout the project, the marine and engineering teams maintained continuous operational coordination and adhered to strict safety, health, and environmental protocols. The company emphasized that all activities were completed in accordance with the technical and operational requirements established by Shell.
The early completion of the program also strengthens the company’s image within the offshore geotechnical services market in Malaysia, particularly in operations linked to the oil and gas sector in Sarawak.
Syahril Ikhwan, HELMS’ director of operations, noted that the result reflects the commitment of the onshore and offshore teams to maintain high standards of operational performance.
Safe and efficient execution remains a key priority in all HELMS operations. Completing the SHELL campaign ahead of schedule reflects the commitment, expertise, and teamwork demonstrated throughout the project.

HELMS will continue offshore work for PETRONAS
After completing activities for SHELL, the company will resume a new series of soil investigation campaigns for PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB), focused on well sealing and abandonment operations in Sarawak waters.
The company currently maintains long-term offshore geotechnical engineering contracts with major energy operators in the region, reinforcing its involvement in marine energy infrastructure projects.
Keyfield Itqan will reinforce the company’s geotechnical fleet
Meanwhile, the company is progressing with preparations to incorporate the Keyfield Itqan, its new Malaysian-flagged geotechnical vessel DP2. The vessel will feature a central well, a four-point mooring system, positioning reference systems, and the company’s HG-50 offshore drilling rig.
With this addition, the company seeks to expand its marine geotechnical research capabilities and respond to the increase in offshore activities in Southeast Asia.
